The Illinois SIMOS team joined community members in New Lenox, Ill., on Nov. 10 to help assemble “The Moving Wall,” a half-size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial that travels the country and was due to stay in the Chicago suburb through Veterans Day weekend.
As a procession of veterans on motorcycles and fire trucks and police cars with American flags and POW flags flying drove by, the team put the panels in place and prepared the wall for viewing.
The Moving Wall has been traveling the country for 36 years since Vietnam veteran John Devitt attended the 1982 dedication in Washington, D.C., and wanted to build something that would help share the feelings he had about the wall with people who could not make it to the nation’s capital to see it. Since its first display in 1984, it has traveled to all 50 states and beyond, bringing a moving visual honoring those who served in Vietnam.
“It was a true privilege to assist with assembling the Vietnam Moving Wall in New Lenox today,” said Cheryl Harvey, regional recruiting manager for SIMOS in Illinois. “Seeing the American flag flying high on the Marines’ birthday and for Veterans Day was an incredible thank you to all who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedoms.”
